Scouting with trail cameras

Trail cameras for scouting whitetail deer and deer management have become very popular in recent years. Placed over a food plot or mineral plot/lick they can be very effective tools. Because of the relative low cost of digital cameras, we are no longer bound by the 35mm, 24 exposure limit. An SD card can allow for hundreds or thousands of pictures before your site must be disturbed. Some send pictures directly to your computer or phone. Infrared flashes allow for night time pictures that won't spook game.

Ultimately scouting with trail cameras allows the avid deer manager the chance to monitor his or her deer population and track movement patterns for hunting purposes. For many it turns into an enjoyable hobby that keeps the summer months interesting.

The following sections discuss some of the considerations surrounding trail camera use.
