Mineral licks

Mineral attractants whether in mineral block or ground lick form can be an excellent whitetail deer management tool in terms of health, antler growth and the ability to draw deer to an area. Many products are available for this purpose, but be careful of salt/sodium content. While it is an attractant, and necessary as such, it does little for deer health or antler growth, especially when used in excess. The minerals added in addition to the salt content are the important ingredients. If you are using a product with 90-95% salt, it will be more cost effective to purchase a block of salt or a bag of softener salt and use that instead.

If your goal is to increase antler growth and provide an attractant (check local baiting regulations) these sites should be maintained year round.

The following sections consider the two primary methods of mineral supplementation, creating ground licks and mineral blocks.
