Habitat improvement

Other than developing food plots, deer managers have methods for maximizing their efforts. In terms of habitat improvement, hinge cutting, clear cutting, planting and pond construction can be valuable tools. Most landowners or leaseholders are interested in maximizing the health of the deer herd in their area to whatever extent they can, but also realize that when working with a small to midsize piece of land their impact is a small part of the big picture in relative terms.
The primary or at least equal benefit of their efforts is that their land will hold more deer and increase their hunting enjoyment and/or opportunities. If we consider what we have the ability to control in terms of a deer's primary needs (food, shelter and water), we may not optimize our land's potential if we only focus on food plots.
The following sections discuss possibilities for improving your land to meet your deer herd's other needs, shelter and water.
