Census taking/patterning and placement

Especially during summer use trail cameras are an excellent piece of equipment for determining what type of deer and how many are on your land.  These tools are best placed to cover a food source or mineral lick when in use for a general census.

During and shortly prior to hunting season they may be  used to scout a specific hunting area for travel patterns and time of day or to pattern a specific deer.  When used as such, food sources may not be an option and it is quite possible the number of pictures will go down significantly.  When using trail cameras in this manner be careful not to disturb your hunting sites too often or in a way that will minimize its potential.  Use all of the scent eliminating techniques you would on a hunt and try not to recover the cameras at a time when you think deer may be present.

Always place cameras in a north or south direction as sunlight will often times trigger the sensor.
